Moss is great for a low-maintenance, soft, naturalized shady garden. If desired, you can alternate ferns, shade plants and flowers. This will give you a year-round area that will be consistantly soothing to the senses. When you receive the packaged moss, dampen it, and it will come back to life within an hour or so. Decide where you want to place your woods ferns and plants and bury them in the soil just as you would in your garden.
Then if you have purchased our polymer granules to aid in moisture retention, sprinkle them over the soil in approximately 1 tablespoon per every 6.8 square feet or 8 oz. per 300 square feet, then scratch them in with a rake. These granules are great for keeping the moss moist while it is establishing, and prevents it from drying out as easily on a long term basis. Spread the moss out over the area, surrounding the plants and flowers you put out earlier, then press firmly into the soil with your hands. Plants love this cover for their roots. Water the area completely saturating it in order to activate the granules beneath the moss, causing it to adhere more readily to the surface.
If you have rocks or boulders in your shade area that you would like to naturalize with moss, you may make a moss slurry with 1/4 cup of buttermilk, 1 teaspoon of granules, one part moss and 1 1/2 parts room temperature water. Place it in a blender and blend till "chopped up well) and is of a sauce-like consistency. Smear this mixture all over the surface that you want to grow the moss on. It should stay there even in hard rains due to the granules, and begin to grow.
